Seeing Red

Up here in the hills of New Hampshire, the sugar maple leaves are turning red and leaves are dropping, littering the forest floor in heaps of clashing colors. Some wildflowers and garden flowers remain, competing with the colors of the trees.

When I venture from flower to flower...I seem to be following the pattern of the bumble bees. Soon this lavish landscape will strip bare and again we will see beyond the trees.

Time blazes past

We have had some chilly nights, but wildflowers are still bright by the brook and pond and there is much left to explore. I returned to the sweet spot of soil where we discovered the doll's eyes (which I now realize were not really used in dolls----I had misunderstood).
There are several varieties of golden rod there in this little spot of ground near the brook and close to the dam. This might be zig zag golden rod. I am not sure.
The leaves on the sugar maples are reddening more and more as each days passes. We are nervous that we won’t get enough wood in on time for the winter. Lindley’s chain keeps dulling. The wood of the fallen trees he is cutting up are hard, some like rock.
Time blazes past.

Flowers in the Rain

Today it rained finally after so many days without it. We went fishing at Millen Pond despite the damp weather and Lindley caught a bass. It's now in the freezer. I got cold so we returned home and Lindley continued to fish.
Carol, the chair of the Washington Conservation Commission, came over to help identify some of our plants. We have an amazing variety - including a plant with seeds which that were once used to make doll's eyes (it's on this blog...can you guess which plant it is?) It is actually poisonous so I hope no small child succumbed after nibbling on their doll's head.
My camera is not charged up so I didn't get any pictures today, but here is one from last week...butterflies enjoying the Joe Pie Weed.

Home Fishing

We have a variety of fish in our pond. Lindley has also caught trout (stocked by us), catfish and bass. We would like to be able to stock the pond well enough that we could eat the fish from it. Then our fish would be quite fresh.
I am tired of eating fish from half way around the world.
